This is the third of three courses on Public Health Reaching Across Sectors (PHRASES).

Training Overview

This course focuses on how to use strategic messaging tools simultaneously with framing tools to motivate cross-sector partners and other non-public health experts to support public health interventions, programs, and policies. The strategic messaging tools that are explored include unique value proposition, narrative structure, one-minute messages, and the public health story map.

The entire training is expected to take 60 minutes to complete. There are no prerequisites. After finishing all modules, learners will earn a certificate of completion. When the certificate is available, learners will see a Certificate button on their dashboard.

Participants will need a broadband internet connection (Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are preferred browsers) and computer speakers. For technical support, please contact emoryphtc@emory.edu

Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the relationships between framing recommendations and strategic messaging in the PHRASES toolkit.

  • Draft a one-minute message by outlining a narrative structure and using a frame element to communicate a public health idea to a non-expert.  

  • Explain the steps required to craft a strategic story, including asking questions to understand your story’s purpose and audience and the four components of a public health story map. 

  • Describe three common storytelling challenges that public health experts may face.

  • Create a compelling story about a public health concept using the public health story map and guidance on tackling common storytelling challenges.
